1731 Deed where the Grennan Lands are handed over to Andrew, James and Charles Sproule of Grennan

In this 1731 Deed, the townland of Grennan is put in the hands of three of the sons of Cornet Andrew Spruell, Andrew, James and Charles Sproule. Cornet Andrew leased this land in 1719, and he is either recently dead at this stage in 1731, or he is retiring and handing over control to his sons. This was the custom in those days.

·         Hugh Edwards of Castlegore was referred to as ‘late of Castlegore’ as he was in fact dead by the time this deed was registered, he died 1837.

·         Here we learn that the townland of Grennan is already being farmed by 3 of Cornet Andrew’s sons, Andrew, James and Charles who are farmers, and that the three are now officially on the lease. Cornet Andrew took out this lease in 1719

·         We now know 5 of Cornet Andrew’s sons, and we know the order in which they were born. He has told us the 3 youngest, Joseph, Charles and Oliver in the 1719 deed. Now we have two older brothers, Andrew and James. We also know that James is the younger of these two as the youngest is always named as a life on the deed.
