Part 4 – From Carncorran Y-DNA to the Early Sproules in Ardstraw

We have been teasing out an early Sproule family in the Ardstraw area. We are building a framework by combining the information from Y-DNA, with what we know on each of these early Sproule people, and we are adding into that the view of John Inch, our early Sproule family historian.

Now we can put this together into several possible options.

1.       We know for certain that Robert of Lisleen, who is the Robert Sproule in the Casltederg grave existed, and that he had a family. He is our ‘Father Sproule’. We know also that it is highly likely that Robert of Lisleen was the son of Robert Sproule in the The Civil Survey of 1654, who sold his land in Boggach, and came then to Tyrone. So we have our first two generations.

2.       Next, we will put in the two options for Cornet Andrew with a caveat attached – see below.

Option 1 - Cornet Andrew is a son of Robert Sproule of Lisleen

Option 2 - Cornet Andrew is a grandson of Robert Sproule of Lisleen

The Carncorran Sproules by Heather ArnottNow, to make progress, we need more information. The missing DNA would help enormously.  We have the Cornet Andrew descendant Y-DNA, and from it we learnt a lot. We have the Carncorran Y-DNA. What we need now, and what could possibly shoot holes right through my lovely diagrams, is the Golan Sproule DNA. We don't have that, and it’s not going to be at all easy to find a male Golan Sproule descendant.  It's a major problem, and we will need a lot of help on that!

But this tree also helps us look a bit more closely at the sons of Cornet Andrew Spreull - and we may be able to make some progress there.

Caveat

We do not know for definite that Cornet Andrew was a descendant of Robert Sproule of Lisleen. John Inch thought that he was, but I believe that was simply because Robert’s grave in Castlederg was the only one around! They thought at that time that he was the first Sproule and hence all were related to him. He wasn’t, of course. But he was the first one that appears in records in Tyrone. We also know that there was a Sproule family in Tullymoan at the same time. However, from the Y-DNA standpoint, it does not look like Cornet Andrew’s descendants and Tullymoan descendants are very closely related. It is highly likely that Robert of Lisleen was the son of Robert Sproule in the The Civil Survey of 1654, who sold his land in Boggach, and came then to Tyrone. So Sproules in the Ardstraw area are likely to be his children. Thomas of Golan was almost certainly his descendant. It looks like Cornet Andrew was related to Thomas of Golan, so I think it is a good guess that Cornet Andrew is the son or grandson of Robert of Lisleen.
