  1. I come from this "Another Grennan" branch of Sproules - my great-grandmother is the Lulu Sproule (born 1893 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) shown at the bottom of tree G. I wonder how Hugh Sproule of Grennan / Greenan fits in with the other branches? Alas Jack Elder could not determine it.

Lulu's father was Oliver Sproule (1861-1932), son of Oliver Sproule (1815-1870), son of Oliver Sproule (alive in 1856 at the time of his son's marriage to Mary Cunningham), son of Hugh Sproule.

  2. Re John Sproule of Grennan , third child of Hugh and Miss Houston - he married Elizabeth Wallace (date not known). Their eldest child Wallace was born in 1811 in Grennan and their sixth child, Jane, was born in 1818 ( she being my gggm). Oliver was an older brother of John.

  3. "Another Grennan" branch - here's what I've written about the landholding of this branch:

In the record for Greenan in 1853 (in the Landed Estate Court Records), in relation to a bankrupt estate in which Juliana Countess of Belmore was the freeholder, "John Sproule, James Sproule, Oliver Sproule" appear together as tenants of 142/2/20 acres/roods/perches of land held in lease by John Buchanan (born c. 1792) and George Buchanan (born c. 1790), survivors of James Caldwell, of Grennan, to whom the lease was made in 1796 for 3 lives. The three brothers also appear as James Sprowl, Sen. (to distinguish him from James Sprowl, Esq. which would be of The Holme family), John Sprowl, Oliver Sprowl, in the townland of Greenan. By the time of Griffith's valuation of 1860 for the townland of Greenan, their representatives were tenants or lessors of land, lot numbers 10-15, which contained 143/3/22 acres/roods/perches. It appears as though John and James, and likely Oliver senior, are deceased, as it refers to Hugh (John) [meaning John's son Hugh], Hugh (James) [James' son Hugh] and Oliver.

  4. autosomal DNA results of descendants of John Sproule and Oliver Sproule would appear to confirm a close relationship between those two individuals; there is a descendant of James Sproule as well who is a "match", but this branch included a maternal line from John Sproule, so there has not yet been a separate autosomal link to the James Sproule line (later known as "Sproule of the Brae")

    1. Elizabeth Wallace, wife of John Sproule, and Margaret Wallace (perhaps of Castlefinn?), wife of Oliver Sproule, could be sisters (likely?), which would reveal itself in closer autosomal matches between individuals descended from John & Oliver compared to those from James (whose wife was Elizabeth Davis)
